Chris Smith Reports:  Got up at 3AM for a dawn patrol run and checked the weather, heavy rain at the house and most of the way to the beach.  I checked the forecasts and it was looking like low tide would be worth trying.  So, I did the intelligent thing and went back to bed for a couple of hours.  I left for the beach in a light rain and was even blessed with some dry sunny weather in the middle of the trip, which just added to the stoke.  I arrived at  Assateague Island (federal park - north parking lot) at about 11AM and there were about six cars there and folks out in the water.  Thankfully the lifeguards were letting us surf in the swimming area, although much farther out.  This could have been because a couple of them were out in the line-up.

There was a light offshore breeze that held the faces up quite nicely, waist to chest high.  Nobody was getting spectacular rides but there were definitely some nice ones to be had.  I scraped and rewaxed my board when I returned home from the friday dawn patrol.  The new traction with the coat of wax was appreciated as I put a more serious fin on and was carving the bottom turn hard.  I decided to go sans gloves, boots or hood and was quite comfortable for the first 3 hours, but then the water temp started to catch up to me.  I paddled in from my last wave, damn that trench between shore and the sandbar is deep, with a smile and some sore arms.

It is nice to be able to take a shower and rinse the salt off.  The drive back was rather uneventful, with the exception that the police were out in force, until the merge of 50 and 301.  The stop and go went pretty well for the rest of the trip across the bridge.

Hope to see some folks out there next time.
