Annapolis Surf Club
"The Wipe-Out Members"

The "Wipe-Out Chapter" of the ASC consists of those who have deserted the
fine Western Shores of the Chesapeake for waters elsewhere.

Becoming a "Wipe-Out" Member:
1) The person requesting Wipe-Out status needs to have been a full-fledged member for one year by paying $25 dues (or being sponsored by someone who paid the dues for them).
2) Before
Wipe-Out membership is granted the Board of Kahunas will determine if the member is geographically dislocated enough to be considered. (Basically if they live too far for regular interaction with Club.)
3) Once an applicant is granted
Wipe-Out status they have all access to member benefits except the ability to nominate or vote in Club elections.

Austin Saunders
Longboarder - Virginia Beach, VA

I started surfing about 12 years ago, am 22 years old (2006) and have been building boards for almost 6 years. My quiver is too long/variable to list. Favorite thing to do is noseride. Born and raised in VaBeach. I go to Hawaii every year, kind of my return to mecca type of deal. I try to surf when its good and work when its not. I am kinda boring...... haha.

I am a surfboard shaper:
Austin Surfboards.

Brett McDowell
Shortboarder/Longboarder - Satellite Beach, FL

I previously lived in Maryland, including Crofton, College Park and Silver Spring. I surfed with my brother Mike, Paul and Mark (members of the ASC) most of the time in Delaware before moving to Satellite Beach, FL. I now live on the beach and surf when the surfs there (instead of driving 2 hours) and without freezing to death. Being Florida, I usually ride a 9’6 tokayoma in the summer (unless we are in hurricane alley) and a 7’0 Walden or 6’6 egg (local) for the larger swells in fall/winter. I live within 5 miles of some the best breaks in Florida including 2ndlight and RC’s, but there are so many breaks it really doesn’t matter. Of course I always look forward to hitting the Delaware breaks when in town.

Chris Daniel aka "CD"
Shortboarder - Rhode Island, formerly Baltimore, MD

I grew up in Pacific Grove, Central CA.  Have been surfing for about 19 years living in California in Pacific Grove, Monterey, Lake Tahoe, San Diego and on the East Coast in Newport RI and Baltimore. Additionally, I lived for about three years in the tropical rain forest of Cameroon - did get to surf there on the West African Coast (once!) and also lived in Haiti for about 2 years where I surfed very regularly at a left hand rivermouth break in Jacmel. Due to my work, I have surfed in few great Central/South American spots as well as in the Caribbean.

My motto - be a global citizen and always go deep!

Ilia Voronchihin
Shortboarder - San Diego, CA

I am sad to announce that I have moved to southern San Diego. It was pleasure to surf and get to know some of you. Some of my favorite and unforgettable surf sessions was with annapolis surf club.

Next time you are in San Diego, please stop by. I live right on the beach with a several quality breaks within a walking distance and a bunch of beach break right up front. And there is Baja California five minutes from my place. You can sleep on my living room floor for a week before my girlfriend will kick you out.

Formerly from Annapolis, MD. I am 28 years old. I came to the U.S. seven years ago and have been surfing since. Working on my masters degree in architecture and working part time.  My buddy and I used to go surfing all year around to the Lewes, DE.

Jim Hedman aka "PaipoJim"
Paipo Boarder - Portland, OR, formerly of Silver Spring, MD

I hosted ASC'ers Neal and Rod during one of Rod's visit to the PNW. Pictured is "little jim" next to the big trees along a trail to a headland in Northern Oregon.

Rick Miale aka "RickM"
Bodyboard/Paipo/Longboard - Asheville, NC

My Quiver: 9'8" Weber Performer (with hatchet fin), 7'6" Future Fins thruster, a 42" Morey bodyboard and Rod's old Ashton paipo, "Red." I starting bodyboarding in the late 70s when my Dad brought home a Morey from Califormia. From 1982 to 1984 I competed on the local scene (Virginia Beach). Took up surfing around '84 and have continued to surf (with a break here and there) since then. My other interests include cooking and horseback riding. I am a regular GuidoPalooz'er.

Roy Spencer
Longboarder, Shortboarder, Bodyboarder and Windsurfer
Ocean City, NJ, formerly Millersville, MD

Started surfing back in the late 60's at Natasket Beach, MA. Surfed beaches from Wells Beach, Maine to Rhode Island. Most of the time I was surfing Cape Cod and Newport, RI beaches. While in the USAF, I was stationed at SJAFB, USAF Goldsboro, NC and was able to surf Atlantic Beach / Emerald Isle for a couple of years. Stationed in Korea for a year with no waves!! The 90’s keep me busy with family and work, except for the family vacations to OCNJ. Still have my original Jim Phillips Surfboard (7’6”), added a hand-shaped Natural Art performance long board (9‘), couple of body boards and a few windsurfing boards.

Tim Guy
Shortboarder - Odenton, MD (2005-07), now back in Wisconsin

Until moving to the area I was a Great Lakes surfer living in Milwaukee, WI. I mostly ride a 6' 4. Learned to surf on Lake Michigan and surfed there as much as the waves allowed for the last 4 years.

Other Interests:: Soccer, Drums, Guitar, Fast Cars

ASC member makes the Delmarva news. This week's surfing article written by Roy Harrell in the Beachcomber and Delaware Coast Press is about a surfing trek he and his kids decided to try last week down at Tom's Cove, in Chincoteague. They wanted to see if the stories about it working with a NE storm were true. In the story he wrote, "A recently transplanted surfer from the Great Lakes [ASC's Tim Guy] asked if he could tag along. He was even more amped than we were, and his optimistic chatter about perfect backside barrels soon had us all frothing." Roy Harrell went on to explain how they were skunked and that, "the poor guy from the Great Lakes turned right around and headed off muttering something about it being better in Sheboygan." [see above]
